Local Attorney Advises Motorcyclists To Watch Out For Left-Turning Vehicles - Especially When Passing
The Florida Highway Patrol reported that the accident occurred in the afternoon, involving a 42-year-old motorcyclist from North Port and a similarly aged man driving a pickup truck. The pickup truck slowed and began making a left turn when the motorcyclist, attempting to pass the slower traffic, collided with the vehicle because they did not know that the truck was turning.
This type of traffic accident is avoidable if either the motorcyclist or the driver of the 4-wheeled vehicle is more cautious.
Motorcyclists in a hurray or getting frustrated when when traffic slows down should be absolutely sure it's safe to pass. Once you are accelerating to a speed that can overtake traffic it's impossible to stop short if needed. Motorcyclist should keep in mind that not every driver turning left will have their turn signal on, and sometimes the actual vehicle turning is hidden from view by a larger vehicle from the motorcyclists perspective. Either of these scenarios can lead to a deadly surprise.
For drivers making left turns on busy roads - always use your turn signal with enough time for other motorists to react. Further prior to committing to your turn be sure to check the side-view mirror for traffic that may be attempting to pass while you are turning. While you may not be at fault, checking the side mirrors twice can save a life and avoid a serious accident.
For motorcyclists, this accident is a stark warning. It's essential to understand the limitations and blind spots of larger vehicles like trucks. Slowing down and ensuring clear visibility before overtaking other vehicles can save your life. Or even just a little patience. Remember, the open road is unpredictable, and caution is your best companion.
