Crane vs Semi Crash Spotlights The Dangers Of Commercial Vehicles On I-75

Interstate 75, a major artery connecting Florida's cities, accommodates a daily influx of thousands of vehicles, from heavy commercial trucks and passenger cars to construction equipment. While these highways are vital for transportation and commerce, they also present significant risks due to the sheer volume and variety of traffic, especially when large vehicles like commercial trucks are involved in accidents.

On Wednesday, March 5, at 12:30 PM, a severe collision occurred at mile marker 174 near the Berkshire Street overpass in Charlotte County. The accident involved a crane and a tractor-trailer, resulting in a complete blockage of all southbound lanes. This accident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers inherent in highway travel, particularly when factors such as speed, visibility, and the presence of large vehicles converge.

The collision is currently under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), and details about the cause of the crash and the extent of injuries are still emerging. However, preliminary reports suggest that the crash caused significant damage to both vehicles and led to serious traffic delays in the area.

Updated Details of the Accident

Roadway Closure and Detour Information
As of 4:25 PM on March 5, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) confirmed that all southbound lanes of I-75 remain closed. Traffic is being diverted off the interstate at Exit 179 onto Toledo Blade Blvd. To re-enter I-75 southbound, motorists should turn right onto Toledo Blade Blvd., then turn left onto Tamiami Trail (US 41), and finally turn left onto Kings Highway to access the I-75 southbound on-ramp.

Accident Sequence and Impact

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the accident occurred in the southbound lanes of I-75 as both vehicles approached the Berkshire Street overpass. A tractor-trailer hauling a flatbed trailer loaded with construction equipment was traveling at a reduced speed of approximately 35 mph in the center lane with its hazard lights activated due to a mechanical issue. Despite a clear line of sight and dry road conditions, a crane traveling behind the truck at an estimated speed of 60 mph failed to slow down in time. The driver of the crane, 32-year-old Robert Hernandez, stated that he was distracted and did not notice the truck's reduced speed until it was too late. As a result, the front of the crane collided with the rear trailer portion of the semi-truck.

The impact caused significant damage to both vehicles. The crane's front end was crushed, and the force of the collision caused the crane to rotate and overturn onto its side, spilling approximately 60 gallons of mixed petroleum products, including hydraulic oil, diesel, and gasoline. This hazardous spill further complicated cleanup efforts and led to extended traffic delays. The semi-truck's rear trailer was mangled, and debris, including scattered construction equipment, was strewn across the highway. In the aftermath of the crash, a black sedan driven by 27-year-old Sarah Miller struck a large piece of debris that had fallen from the truck, causing damage to the sedan's front bumper and hood. Fortunately, Miller sustained only minor injuries.

Emergency Response and Roadway Impact

Emergency crews, including Florida Highway Patrol officers, North Port Fire Rescue, local law enforcement, wreckers, and cleanup crews, responded swiftly to clear the scene and assist those involved. The wreckage from the overturned crane created a major traffic disruption, leading to extended delays for southbound travelers. Crews are currently working to remove the crane, clean up the hazardous spill, and conduct emergency roadway repairs.

Highway Safety Considerations

This accident serves as a critical reminder of the importance of maintaining safe following distances and adjusting speeds appropriately—especially when approaching slow-moving or hazard-signaled vehicles. On highways like I-75, where large commercial vehicles, construction equipment, and passenger cars share the road, a momentary lapse in attention can lead to serious consequences.

Drivers should always remain alert, anticipate changing traffic conditions, and ensure they have ample space to react in case of sudden stops or slow-moving vehicles. Additionally, motorists should be mindful of work vehicles, transport equipment, and emergency signals, as failing to adjust speed accordingly can increase the likelihood of severe accidents.

Moving Forward

While this particular crash did not result in fatal injuries, it highlights the risks associated with highway driving, particularly when heavy equipment and large commercial vehicles are involved. As emergency crews continue their efforts to clear roadways and restore normal traffic flow, this incident serves as a call for heightened awareness and responsible driving habits on Florida’s highways.

By staying attentive, maintaining safe speeds, and respecting traffic signals and hazard warnings, drivers can help prevent accidents like this and ensure safer roadways for everyone.
